Chief Engineer on the Naval Cutter SS Harriet Lane

SS Harriet Lane was one of the relief ships sent to resupply Fort Sumter which arrived as the fort was being
surrendered. The Harriet Lane fired a shot across the bow of ship in the harbor. This is beleived to be the first
shot by the Navy in the Civil War. With the fort surrendered the convoy retreated and returned to New York.
